The Kajjansi Rotarian 2019 - Installation Magazine of President Joyce Magala

Let’s Connect the World

Congratulations!
Dear Rotarians and partners in service, we take this opportunity to congratulate you upon successful completing the past rotary year and having been able to make it to this   Rotary year 2019 - 2020.
It is going to be a rewarding and exciting year, but one that requires the commitment of time and effort to ensure a successful and exciting year for our club.
The success of our club will depend on our collective responsibility as leaders ready to ensure that Rotary Connects the World.

How shall we ensure that Rotary Connects the World, RI President Malony calls says “Through Rotary, we connect to the incredible diversity of humanity on a truly unique footing, forging deep and lasting ties in pursuit of a common goal,” adding that “In this ever more divided world, Rotary connects us all.”

We shall be able to connect with people we would never have met who are like us than we ever could have known. We shall be able to connect with our communities and other people who need our help.

When a group of my club members approached me in 2016/17 to be the clubs president in 2018/19, they asked me whether am ready to lead the club.  I replied that I was indeed ready, however, I kept having second thoughts about my assertion. It was not until the theme of the rotary year BE THE INSPIRATION was unveiled that I was inspired to wholesomely accept the responsibility that my club was giving me.

During this one year as the Club President, I have gained lots of experience and been exposed to several aspects of service, not forgetting the number of friends I have made. I am indeed sincerely grateful to my club for having given me this opportunity to serve as your President.

I started the journey as a Club President on 1st July 2018. As a club we set goals and laid out a work plan on how to achieve them. I want to proudly report that we have accomplished about 90% of our set goals.
All these have been achieved through joint efforts and high level of commitment by all club members, our Assistant Governor, District and Country officers, my family members and friends of Kajjansi. Thank you so much for making this possible.

Allow me give an account of what has transpired during this Rotary Year.
a) PROJECTS
We did a refurbishment of Nyakihanga Primary School in Ntungamo district.  The funds for the project came from the adverts in the installation magazine, funds from the Guest of Honor during the Installation - Dr Mutambi Benon, Club members and friends of Kajjansi.

At St Kizito Katwe Bweya Primary school, the Club completed two class room block. The funding of this project was from the sale of cards for the installation as well as contributions from the club and our guests on the day.

At St Padre Pio, Rotary Technical Institute Buikwe, the Club continued supporting the institute by paying teachers’ salaries, buying food for students and equipping the institute. As a result the capacity of the students has improved from 3 to the current 57. Special thanks go to Brother Kiiza for his efforts to mobilize more students.

Under the mission green project, the Club planted 1 acre of an orchard at our rotary Technical institute in Buikwe. We have also planted 5 acres of trees in Kasanjje in addition to the ten we planted last rotary year which are growing well.

The club’s signature project - the car boot sale was done on 1st and 2nd December, 2018 where the Club raised a total of 1 million shillings. Funds from this project are ring-fenced to pay school fees and maintenance for the children that were abandoned by their parents in a village in Buikwe District. Additionally the Club has undertaken to cover school costs for Ms. Mariam Nakabugo the student who got a first grade from Katwe Bweya Primary School hover her parents could not afford to take her for secondary Education. Special recognition to goes to PAG Ddamulira for securing a bursary for this girl and the club is meeting all other requirements.

Our monthly immunization at Janyi has continued where by an average of 150 children are immunized every 2nd Saturday of the month. Special recognition to Rtn Olivia Asiimwe Kabalega as well as club members who attend this monthly activity.

b) MEMBERSHIP RETENTION AND EXTENSION
We had set a target of recruiting 6 new members into the club but we have exceeded this by recruiting 10. Special thanks goes to Rtn Alex Kamukama Director membership for the job well done.

The club is in the process of mentoring a new club - The Provisional Rotary Club of Kigo which awaits to be chartered, special thanks goes, to PAG Julliet Kyokunda who has walked the journey with the new club.

c) ROTARY FOUNDATION
The club had set a target of giving 8000USD to the Foundation. This target was however exceeded by 2000USD but we exceeded that and we contributed 10,000/. These funds were contributed by 17 club members which won us 2 awards during the TRF dinner, Thank you my club members for making us shine.

d) CLUB ADMINISTRATION
We have had a wonderful year with very interesting fun filled and educative fellowships graced by guest speakers. Our several regular guests are a testimony to this!

The Club as a norm has always  organized an annual retreat  where the progress of the club is put to check. This year, the Club retreat was held on 8th march, 2019 where we has a SWOT analysis for the now ending Rotary year as well as set goals for the incoming year. I report that the retreat was a success.

The club has held four home hospitalities and a memorable charter night. We continue to celebrate achievements: such as birthdays, anniversaries and others. We also join our members in times of sorrow.

I am pleased that our incoming AG Daniel Lubogo has already started engaging with us and we look forward to a pleasant year of service together. PDGs and all past leaders present thank for inspiring us, members from the Rotary fraternity and Friends of Rotary your presence speaks volumes of your commitment and support for our club. My family of RC Kajjansi, thank you for putting the trust in me to steer this mighty club to greater heights. My dear family members thank for providing a shoulder to lean on.

My Journey as a Rotarian

I first heard about Rotary in the mid-90s from my elder brother William Kizimula who was then a member of the Rotaract Club of Kololo. He used to share with me pleasant life changing experiences he enjoyed together with fellow Rotaractors while implementing service projects in various parts of the country. Later on my dad Solomon Mpalanyi (R.I.P) had joined the Rotary Club of Seeta and as he was saving funds to participate in the DCA due to take place in Mombasa that Rotary year, he encouraged me to join Rotary, but I hesitated.

In 2006, PAG Kalooli and AGE Theresa Baganja invited me to a home hospitality hosted by AGE Charles Kabunga of RC Makindye. At that event, I was pleasantly surprised to interact with a number of people of high social standing who espoused values that sounded similar to my social development work of getting down to the grassroots and seeking solutions towards serving disadvantaged people in the community.

From then on, I became a regular guest at RC Kajjansi until I was inducted by PDG Robert Sebunya during the reign of PP Theresa (my mentor) 11 years ago. I take great pride in belonging to this wonderful charity organization where I get opportunity to learn, serve, network and have fun. I am highly motivated by members RC Kajjansi who have maintained an amicable environment that attracts one to persevere despite all odds.

Along the way, due to demands of professional development, I took a break from active rotary service between 2010 and 2014. Fortunately, during the break, my family especially my husband PP Charles Magala was very supportive and maintained the rotary spirit alive at home. I take this opportunity to thank him for being my safe island, without which I would not be serving in Rotary.

As a Rotarian, I have served as Bulletin and Polio Officer, Director Membership, Director Club Administration, and recently as Club Secretary/ President Elect. The opportunity to serve in various capacities before taking over as President presents a great opportunity for future leaders of the club to appreciate the strengths and challenges of fellow members in the club through direct engagement and interaction at various levels. This unique leadership and succession plan should be maintained. At this moment allow me to acknowledge President Flavia Mujurizi and the outgoing board members for the service we have rendered together. Given that Rotary offers opportunity for interaction with people of diverse professional, business and religious affiliations, I look forward to utilizing my skills and competences to connect with the world. Over the next rotary year, I dedicate my efforts to strengthening existing relationships and friendship amongst all members of the club and the entire rotary fraternity as we connect with humanity.

As I conclude, I appreciate the confidence accorded to me by members of RC Kajjansi by entrusting me with this honorable office to serve as President during 2019/2020. I commit to serve to the best of my ability with support from all the past presidents and members of the club.  I will be happy to continue receiving words of wisdom, strategic guidance and support as well as constructive criticism to facilitate further development of our club.

I wish to thank our partners in service for the confidence and trust in RC Kajjansi. Specifically, PDG Emmanuel Katongole and PDG Ken Wycliffe Mugisha have generously made financial pledges towards infrastructure development at Katwe Bweya primary school in Wakiso district.  We recognize our corporate members, NICAN Resort who offered the club an ambient venue for fellowship and for participating meaningfully in many events. The Brothers of Christian Instruction, Kisubi who are managing the Rotary Vocational Institute in Buikwe district. We are grateful to the companies who have supported our projects by advertising in the souvenir magazine. Credit goes to the organizing committee for putting up an honorable event. To all Friends of Rotary and guests, thank you for gracing the occasion.

As a club, we shall maintain the passion for Community Service and strive to promote rotary values, as well as enhance the club’s visibility by implementing impactful projects with dedication, fun and humor. We shall continue efforts to connect to the new generation and increase our giving to TRF.

RC Kajjansi can only grow from strength to strength. It is, however, important to remember that connections will not happen if we wait for some other person or some other time to take action. We are the ones the world has been waiting for to connect with each other. DG Xavier has encouraged us to roll the sleeves and get down and connect with communities for improved service delivery. Pledges and promises alone are not sufficient.  Let us hit the road and fulfill the desire of RIPE Mark Maloney for, “connection is what makes the experience of Rotary so very different… in Rotary, none of us is an island… all of us are here together.”

RC Kajjansi will connect communities through:
Membership retention (100%)
Membership growth (21%)
Membership development and training (2 sessions)
Capacity strengthening of 2 Interact and 2 Rotaract clubs
TRF giving ($10,000)
